HISTORY of the Backpack
From prehistoric times, our ancestors used containers to transport their belongings (weapons, food, etc.). A container that they carried at arm's length is the beginning of the bag, not yet the backpack but already a bag!
In the 11th century, peasants used wicker baskets to transport what they harvested, most of the time they carried it at arm's length and sometimes on their backs. So we can consider the wicker hood as the very first backpack in history, do you agree?
In the 17th century, wooden frames were attached to the shoulders using leather straps. It was a kind of crate backpack that weighed a little heavy.
200 years later, a large leather bag hangs from the wooden frame tadaaaaaaam! The 1st backpack was born.
In 1909, Ole F Bergen had the idea of replacing wooden frames with metal, leather with canvas. The bag is still heavy then, it is improved and developed by two brands that you know well today: Millet and Lafuma. These French designers thus allow the first marketing of the backpack!
In the 1950s, Dick Kelly (an American) invented a product made of aluminum (therefore lighter) and added an abdominal strap to it: would the hiking backpack begin to develop?
It is not finished ! In 1970 the brands developed it more for a more urban use and American students proudly strutted around universities with their bags. In 1980, it finally replaced the leather satchel in French colleges and high schools. AND, in 1990
the
cork backpack is essential thanks to its style and comfort in luxury homes .
In the years that followed, the backpack became more democratic and adapted to the tastes and fantasies of consumers . They come in all shapes and colors and are suitable for a wide range of activities (mountaineering, hiking, cycling, motorcycling, etc.).
